‘Matika’ means ‘mud’ in the local Chinyanja dialect in the remote corner of Zambia where these cushions are made. The collection is inspired by mud cloth and the patterns are reflected in their signature batik technique.

For over 30 years, Tribal Textiles has made batik textiles. Today, they one of the biggest employers in the Luangwa Valley, an area where jobs are scarce.

Design That Has A Story To Tell
Using locally sourced hand-spun natural GMO free cotton, each pillow cover is hand-drawn using a starch resist – a technique that takes years to perfect! – then painted, sun-dried, and baked to create a distinctive crackle texture, making every piece completely unique.
