Warm Up with Fair Trade Turmeric Chai Latte: A Blend of Tradition and Taste
As the chill of winter lingers on, there’s nothing quite like a warming, spiced beverage to keep you cosy. Enter the Fair Trade Turmeric Chai Latte (also known as Golden Milk) —a blend of bold flavours, ethical sourcing, and health benefits that will brighten up your day. It is also loved by everyone! My 7-year-old won’t stop asking me to make this.
A Sip of Tradition
Chai has a rich history rooted in Indian culture, where the warm spices used in the brew are cherished for both their flavour and medicinal properties. By adding turmeric to the classic chai mix, you’re not just elevating the taste; you’re also tapping into the healing power of one of nature’s most powerful anti-inflammatory ingredients. This vibrant, golden-hued drink combines cinnamon, cardamom, and ginger with the earthy warmth of turmeric —offering a blend of sweet, spicy, and soothing notes.
The Power of Fair Trade
As part of Fairbruary (Fair Trade February), it’s the perfect time to highlight the importance of fair trade when it comes to the ingredients that make up our favourite foods. While we don’t currently offer turmeric chai lattes here at Karakorum (although I love it so much I probably should) many ethical food brands and online stores share our commitment to supporting small-scale farmers and fair trade practices. By purchasing products like turmeric, spices, and tea from fair trade sources, you’re helping ensure that the people who grow and harvest these ingredients are paid fairly, work in safe conditions, and benefit from sustainable farming practices. Supporting fair trade means making a positive impact on communities around the world—one cup at a time.
Health Benefits You’ll Love
Beyond its comforting taste, this latte is packed with health benefits:
- Anti-inflammatory: Thanks to turmeric’s active compound, curcumin, it helps reduce inflammation in the body.
- Boosts Immunity: The spices in the chai, including cinnamon and ginger, are known for their immune-boosting properties.
- Digestive Aid: The combination of ginger and cardamom can aid digestion, making this the perfect drink after a meal.
How to Make Your Fair Trade Turmeric Chai Latte
Making your own turmeric chai latte at home is easy and rewarding. Here’s a simple recipe to get you started.
I’ve added a few links to where you can easily get some Fair Trade alternatives.
Ingredients:
- 1 cup of milk (or a plant-based alternative – I like using oat milk as it is nice and creamy – and also one of the most sustainable options!)
- 1 teaspoon of turmeric powder
- A generous dash of ground cinnamon, cardamon and ginger
- tiny teaspoon of coconut oil to make it creamy (optional)
- 1 teaspoon of Agave, honey or maple syrup (optional, but a dash makes it delicious)
- A pinch of black pepper (to enhance the absorption of curcumin)
for spice, I like to add in a teabag of Tea India Masala Chai or YogiTea Classic or some of the wonderful ChalaChai Sticky Masaala Chai.
Instructions:
- In a small saucepan, heat the milk over medium heat.
- Add turmeric, chai of choice, spices, coconut oil (if using) and black pepper. Stir until fully combined.
- Simmer for 5-7 minutes, letting the spices infuse the milk.
- Sweeten with honey or maple syrup if desired. Whisk to get it nice and frothy.
- Pour into a mug and enjoy your ethically sourced, health-boosting latte.
Best served in a sustainable, ethically sourced mug! Especially a large one like this:
